Nuwaraeliya also known as tiny England is considered as one of the most attractive areas of the Central Province. It lies 1868 m above sea level and at an extent of 1741 sq kms.  Average temperatures are 16 celcius centigrade.  Also known as the Sheethapuraya (cold city) and Sheetha rata (cold country) this location is close to Piduruthalagala, the highest set of mountains in Sri Lanka and is also centrally located amidst three mountains - Kikiliyamana and  Ekagas kanda.
In 1846 an English explorer named Samuel Becker who came to Sri Lanka and was the pioneer in initiating the town of Nuwara Eliya.  He was the success behind Nuwara Eliya town towards which he bought 10 acres of land from the English ruler for purposes of husbandry that eventually created jobs and dwelling places which attracted many people from all over the country.


Nuwaraeliya is believed to be a place of marvellous beauty gifted by the nature which holds great locations such as the tallest mountains Piduruthalagala, Kikiliyamana ,Ekagaskanda, Haggala Mount, Thotupola mount, Mount Namunukula , Mount Great Western, Kirigalpotta, Adams peak and also Horton Plains.  


Natural parks and lands, national parks, the Haggala Botanical gardens, Pattipola, the tallest railway station in Sri Lanka, tea estates, beautiful water falls, post office built according to architectural aspects of England, Temples exceeding more than 100 years, churches and all other architectural work in Nuwara Eliya are a few of the attractions that can be mentioned presenting the town as a highly developed venue for Sri Lankan heritage.  


Most foreign travellers proceed towards the central province and out of which 90% travels towards Nuwara Eliya in search of the most panoramic views and climatic comforts.  Therefore Nuwara Eliya is one the main places that attracts many expatriates in terms of tea estates, agricultural aspects, natural locations, places of worship of all religions, milk manufacturing places and animal husbandry, botanical parks, waterfalls etc.
