Start from Thalatuoya, proceed to Marassana town and take the Pasgama Road, and you can reach this Temple 2 kilometers down, on the right hand side.

The Temple is believed to have been built during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. The Bodhi tree in the Temple is said to have been propagated from a branch from the Anuradhapura Sri Maha Bodhi. In the Gampola Era, Paatha Hewaheta was divided to two main areas, namely Sagama Rata and Pasgama Rata.

The former was known as Gam Dahaye Korale comprising 10 villages, while the latter was known as Hewawissa Korale comprising 20 villages. The Temple is situated in Hewawissa. The wall around the Bodhi tree was built by King Watta Gamini Abhaya on his visit to Pasgama.

The Temple was dilapidated during the era of King Rajasinghe II, who entrusted many artifacts found in the temple including ola leaf manuscripts to the Natha Devale. Subsequently the Temple was renovated by King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe, during whose era a Thevava (oblation) similar to that of the Dalada Maligawa was held here. It is not observed in the present day.

Pasgama Viharaya is currently run under the Asgiriya Viharaya in Kandy, with the Medapitiya Temple as the intermediary.
