From the days of Arahat Mahinda, Buddhism spread widely in the country, resulting in a proliferation of temples and Chaityas everywhere. Dating as far back as the Anuradhapura Era, this temple has thrived under the patronage of royalty through centuries.

In the Polonnaruwa Era, King Nisshankamalla planted a row of Bo trees as landmarks for the road leading to Adam’s Peak. One of these Bo trees can be seen in the Meda Maluwa of this temple.

In the Kurunegala Era, King Parakramabahu III built Vijayothpaya, with a roof and surrounding the Dagoba. This, too, can be seen at the Meda Maluwa. The Wallahagoa Temple began, and became famous together with the Devale during the Gampola Era. During the reign of King Parakramabahu III, commonfolk who were terrified when a Kaduru tree was struck by a bolt of lightning, brought the incident to the King’s notice. The King erected this Kataragama devale on that site.

While the Kataragama Devale is situated in the Uda Maluwa (upper precinct) of this temple, the Viharaya is situated in the Meda Maluwa (middle precinct).
