Travel 10 kilometers via Kandy-Kurunegala road to reach the Nugawela town. Proceed another 300 meters to reach this temple.

An inscription on a temple wall says that it was built by King Buwanekabahu the 5th during the Gampola era. The same note is found on a Sannasa (charter) at the venue. According to legends, King Buwanekabahu who came here to build a tank near a paddy field, was so impressed when he saw the striking Bodhiya, that he decided to build a temple.

The edifice is surrounded by a series of stone pillars, erected to signify the ‘poya’ boundary. The roof with decorative pekada (corbels) which rests on boulders is made of thick, ornately carved timber. The entrance consists of an intricately carved stone doorframe.

After the Portuguese invaders destroyed the tampita vihare which existed during the Gampola era, it was renovated by King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe of Kandy. The Makara Thorana is decorated with figures of deities associated with the Kandy tradition. An inscription found on the front wall says that the British destroyed this temple during the 1818 uprising. A brother of King Buvanekabahu the 5th was ordained as a monk in this temple, and trained as a doctor by a medical practitioner from India. The drawings in the Malagammana temple appear to be made in the post-Kandy era.

According to inscriptions on the temple walls, these drawings were done by artists known as Hingulwala Moolachari, Kulugammana Kadjugahawatte Moolachari, Embulpure Kirihamy and Ulladupitiye Rajeshwara Sitthara Naide.
